After a Venetian prologue on the Grand Canal, Venice Carnival kicks off with the traditional “Angel Leap” from the top of the Campanile in Piazza San Marco. The Venetian carnival lasts 10 days and 10 nights between Ash Wednesday and Mardi Gras. The Feast of the Maries is very popular with Venetians, and the chosen one becomes the Angel the following year. Practically every day, hundreds of costumed Italians, French, Germans and Russians stroll through the city of the Doges, creating a timeless, magical and unforgettable universe. The end of Carnival is symbolized by the award of the prize to the most beautiful Venetian, declared Mary of the Year, the flight of the lion which is the symbol of Venice, and the election of the most beautiful costume and mask of Venice.
Numerous public and private balls, concerts and fireworks take place during Venice Carnival. Hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world come to Venice every day during Carnival. But this was just an illusion. During these festivities, traditional costumes responded to codes that indicated membership of different social classes. Sumptuous masked balls were organized for the nobles, and ordinary Venetians could attend only by invitation. They were there to amuse the nobles.

As Venice’s carnival grew, the makers of masques venitiens or mascareri , formed a corporation in 1436.

It was in the 18th century that Carnival became something more than a pre-Carmel outlet, since it would be permitted to wear masks and costumes from October onwards, i.e. especially from the opening of the theatrical season at La Fenice, in deep imbrication with Commedia dell’arte and opera with Albinoni and Vivaldi.

Carnival in Venice was banned by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1797. But it never totally disappeared, as it then expanded to the communes of Veneto and the islands throughout the Venetian Lagoon. In Mestre, Burano, the deambulations, acrobats, white masks or of black velvet, the black capesand costumed balls never stopped. Carnival was reborn Place saint Marc in 1979 thanks to a few Venetian associations, to become today a worldwide event attracting millions of tourists.

Today:

During Carnival thedestination Venice is one of the most sought-after. Participants from all over the world stroll around in period costumes, or showing off costumes they’ve made, thanks to which they express an imagination that’s more overflowing every year. Many tourists choose this period to visit Venice not necessarily in costume, but they take advantage of the féérique atmosphere to enhance their trip to Venice and their traditional and romantic gondola ride under the Rialto. It’s a race for the most beautiful photosof costumed people in front of the bridge of sighs or the campanile in a carnavalesque atmosphere and under a shower of confetti.

That’s kind of what we did, without dressing up but sometimes under a simple cat mask or sporting a tricorne to tell you all about this atmosphere with wonderful photos of carnivals from recent years. Rest assured, our trips weren’t just crowd baths, but also an opportunity to discover the unusual Venice by strolling through neighborhoods or sestiere away from the world.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row full_width=”stretch_row_content_no_spaces” content_placement=”middle” css=”.vc_custom_1523281740784{margin-top: -66px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”Venice Carnival 2024 takes place from February 3 to February 13, 2024″ font_container=”tag:p|font_size:20px|text_align:center|color:%23b31a34|line_height:29px” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text single_style=”” css=”.vc_custom_1706513292672{border-top-width: 1px !important;border-right-width: 1px !important;border-bottom-width: 1px !important;border-left-width: 1px !important;border-left-color: #dd3333 !important;border-right-color: #dd3333 !important;border-top-color: #dd3333 !important;border-bottom-color: #dd3333 !important;}”]The Venice Carnival 2024, scheduled from February 3 to 13, promises to be extraordinary, with a pre-carnival

All the best photos of Venice Carnival by famous bloggers Oriane and Angel.
